Q: I have Windows Vista and after I install, NetZoom doesn't appear to work properly and I don't have any NetZoom options in Microsoft Visio.
A:Due to the way that Microsoft Vista governs file permissions, NetZoom must be installed into the user's directory and not the program files directory. Also, you must right-click on the installer and select "Run as Administrator".
Q: NetZoom is asking me for Proxy Information, what is a Proxy and what do I fill in here?
A:A Proxy Server is a server that acts as an intermediary for requests from clients seeking resources from other servers, such as files from the internet. The NetZoom Proxy Information screen will automatically come up when NetZoom 9 detects that you are accessing the Internet through a Proxy.

Your Proxy server may require authentication before it will allow applications to access the internet; your IT staff will be able to help you find your Proxy information.

(Please note: For additional information on Proxy servers please see your System Administrator)

  NetZoom 9 Demo Questions
Q: How is the demo version different from the subscription version?
A:The demo contains a small sample of the NetZoom 9 equipment library. This sample lets you experience the ease of designing and diagramming your network with NetZoom 9 and allows you to preview the quality and views of equipment shapes offered in the NetZoom 9 library.

In the demo version, you can evaluate most of NetZoom 9's basic features. However, only subscribers can use NetZoom Smart Update and the NetZoom Stencils Web Service.

With a NetZoom 9 subscription, you can access as many as 120,000 + equipment shapes from over 3,500 IT and Audio/Video hardware manufacturers as well as NetZoom 9's full set of features and subscriber services.
Q: Where can I download a demo version of NetZoom 9?
A:Visit www.NetZoom.net and click on the free demo link. Answer a few questions and your demo download will begin.
Q: Do I need a subscription number to use the demo version?

Q: My demo subscription number is expired. Can I still use the demo? Is this an error?
A:No, this is not an error. This "expired" number, which comes with each demo of NetZoom 9, is a temporary subscription number that lets you try out most of our key features.

A valid NetZoom 9 subscription number is required to use features like Smart Update, as well as subscriber services like free shape requests, technical support and downloading shape/Visio stencil updates from the Customer Download Center (CDC).
Q: I downloaded the NetZoom 9 demo and I did not receive the subscription number required for installation.

Switching from Previous Versions of NetZoom
Q: I am a current NetZoom subscriber. Do I need a new subscription number?
A:No. You may continue to use your current NetZoom subscription number for all NetZoom features and downloads.

NetZoom subscription numbers are 25-character keys.
When the install prompts you for your subscription number, enter your subscription number from your previous version and installation will proceed as normal. Also, activation is required to use most product features, use this same number for activation. If you require assistance activating NetZoom, please contact technical support.
Q: I have a previous version NetZoom installed. Do I need to remove it to install NetZoom 9?
A:No. You do not need to remove previous versions of NetZoom to install and use NetZoom 9.
Q: I have many Microsoft Visio diagrams created with previous versions of NetZoom. Can I use them with NetZoom 9?
A:Yes, you may continue to use and modify your existing diagrams; however, we strongly recommend that you update your diagrams with the NetZoom shapes as not all NetZoom 9 features will be usable in older files.

NetZoom 9 offers shapes that have smart behaviors and their embedded property sets differ from those used in prior versions of NetZoom. If you use shapes from different versions of NetZoom, additional precautions will be required.
Q: Can I use shape/stencil updates from a previous version with NetZoom 9, and vice versa?
A:No, updates you downloaded for a prior version only work in that corresponding version of NetZoom.

Media Pack DVDs feature the latest and most downloaded shapes in the NetZoom 9 library. DVDs provides instant access to the most popular shapes available with your subscription, reducing the time and effort spent on downloading shapes.

However, if you still need a shape that is not included on the Media Pack DVD, your subscription gives you full access to the library you purchased. You can download any of the NetZoom 9 shapes in this library through NetZoom 9 Smart Update or the Customer Download Center at www.NetZoom.net/.

Q: Why am I seeing more manufacturers than before?
A:NetZoom 9.3 update allows you access to the entire NetZoom library, as compared to the previous versions of NetZoom, regardless of the library you purchased, so it is possible that you will see more manufacturers than you did with previous versions of NetZoom.
Q: How can I access or choose the library I purchased?
A:With the NetZoom 9.3 update, all users by default have access to the entire NetZoom library. Since you have access to the entire NetZoom library, you no longer have to choose separate libraries.
      Activation
Q: Do I need to Activate and what are the benefits of Activation?
A:Yes, if you don't activate, NetZoom 9 will not work correctly. It is a requirement of the End-User License Agreement between Altima Technologies and the actual user of the product. Someone may have purchased NetZoom 9 for you, so the billing and shipping information we received may differ from your contact and profile information. This information helps us provide better service and support for your particular needs.

Activation lets you access NetZoom Smart Update, Live Search, free shape request service, and other features and services.

Activation ensures that you receive product updates, faster feedback on your service and support inquiries and newsletters to update you with the latest information regarding your NetZoom subscription.

Most importantly, you are doing your part to discourage piracy, which allows us to continue providing further innovation to our valued customers. We are committed to discouraging unauthorized use in a way that minimizes any inconvenience to licensed users.
    Q: What Happens During Activation?
A:When a customer installs NetZoom 9, they are required to activate the product by Internet or phone. If you activate by phone, you will receive an activation key upon successful verification. You will then enter this key within the product to complete activation. Users who activate by Internet within NetZoom will not need a separate activation key.

In both cases, the following information is collected for verification of our licensed users:
    • User name
    • Company name
    • Country
    • Phone number
    • Valid e-mail address
    • Subscription number
Customer Download Center & Shape Requests
Q: When downloading files from the Customer Download Center (CDC), my download times out, I get disconnected, or the download does not start or my download disappears in Windows Vista.
A:NOTE: Always consult your network administrator before changing PC and network security settings.

Many of the files on NetZoom's CDC are relatively large in size, which may cause connections to quit or time out. Make sure your network and PC security settings are optimized for downloading large files.

Adjust Microsoft Windows and VPN firewall settings - If your download does not start at all and/or you receive an error message in your browser, check your Microsoft Windows and VPN firewall settings. Depending on your network security settings, you may have to temporarily turn off your firewall to download from the NetZoom CDC. Of course, be sure to turn your firewall settings back on after the download is complete.

Microsoft Windows Vista Users - Some of the most common issues Microsoft Windows Vista users face in downloading files are incomplete downloads or downloaded files that seem to disappear (the download appears to complete but you cannot see the file in the selected save location). There are many potential reasons, but the following steps tend to resolve such issues:

Internet Browser Settings - Common browsers like Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 and Mozilla Firefox let you adjust privacy settings to trust content from certain websites. Add http://www.NetZoom.net to your list of trusted sites.

Microsoft Windows Defender Settings - Built to provide protection against harmful or unwanted software when turned on, Microsoft Windows Defender may also block legitimate software downloads. To download and launch an install file from a trusted source successfully, you may want to turn Microsoft Windows Defender off temporarily to download setup and update files from the NetZoom CDC.

Using the Control Panel, navigate to the Security screen: Control Panel>Security.
Click on Windows Defender to turn it on or off as necessary.

Windows Firewall Settings - Depending on your network's security settings, you may have to temporarily turn off your firewall to download from the NetZoom CDC. Of course, be sure to turn your firewall settings on after the download is complete.

Using the Control Panel, navigate to the Security screen: Control Panel>Security.
Click on Windows Firewall to turn it on or off as necessary.

Changing Firewall Settings in the Microsoft Windows Vista Command Prompt - You may also work with your network administrator and use the Microsoft Windows Vista Command Prompt to implement a work-around if NetZoom is responding slowly or not responding at all.

Microsoft has posted an article that details these workarounds at: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;934430
Q: I don't need all the shapes in the library I purchased. Do I need to download all of them?
A:No. Shapes in NetZoom are organized by manufacturer and product line. The NetZoom Smart Update utility lets you select only the manufacturers and product lines you wish to use. And you can download shapes as often as you would like 24/7. You can also simply download the shapes you want, by searching for them. In the case, that you do not find the shapes on your local NetZoom library, you may use Live Search to download the shapes you need.
Q: I cannot find the shape or stencil I am looking for?
A:Smart Update: The NetZoom shape library is updated regularly, so check Smart Update to see if your particular shape or stencil was added or updated.

Note: An Internet connection may be required for this feature.

Live Search: If you search for a particular shape that is not available in the library on your local computer, then Live Search will find matching results to your search on our web server, and present them to you. You may select which resulting shapes you want, and download them to your local library.

Note: An Internet connection is required for this feature.

If you cannot find what you are looking for, NetZoom subscribers can request additional shapes or stencils to be created for free.

Request Shape (in NetZoom): In the Results palette, right-click on any shape and select Request Shape. This will open a form in which you can fill in details of the shape you need. Once you are finished, simply click Submit.

Note: An Internet connection is required for this feature.

Request Shape (online): Visit our Free Shape Requests page and use the form to give us as much information as you can about the shape or stencil you need. As your request is processed, you can monitor the status of your request. You will be e-mailed once your requested shapes have been completed.

You may also contact us at Support@AltimaTech.com or 630.281.6464 (8:30 AM to 5:30 PM US Central Time) to request more shapes.

Q: I noticed an error in an equipment shape. How do I submit a correction?
A:If you notice an error in particular equipment shapes, whether it involves its physical qualities or embedded properties, right click on the shape within NetZoom and select "Report Shape"; provide as much information as you can about the nature of the error and click Submit. We will verify your suggested changes and appropriate steps will be taken.
Q: My project requires specific additional shapes not found in the NetZoom 9 Library. How can I get them?
A:At Altima we can accommodate special shape requests. Contact us at Support@AltimaTech.com or 630.281.6464 (8:30 AM to 5:30 PM US Central Time) about your shape and stencil needs.
Q: Where do I save NetZoom files to? I cannot locate the shapes I just downloaded.
A:When downloading from www.NetZoom.net or www.VisioStencils.com the default path should be set to download to you’re My Documents folder. You can find this folder at C:\Documents and Settings\your user name\My Documents

Q: How do I use the .Mdb files that I have downloaded from www.NetZoom.net.
A:If you are looking to download our shapes in .Vss format for use directly with Visio please visit our website at www.VisioStencils.com

In order to use the .Mdb files that you've downloaded from www.NetZoom.net you will need to apply them to the NetZoom 9 application.

To do this open NetZoom 9 from the desktop shortcut, and then launch Smart Update from the shortcut menu in the upper left hand side of NetZoom. Once Smart Update is launched, select Download updates from update disk and browse to the location you've saved the .Mdb files that you've downloaded. This will upload the shapes into NetZoom 9 library for you to start using right away.

Q: I just submitted a shape request, when will it be ready?
A:Shape creation is a service that is provided to current NetZoom subscribers. Typically it takes approximately 3 to 5 business days, although that time frame depends on the amount of information available to develop the shape. If we have difficulties finding specifications and images to create the shape it may take longer.

If we are unable to find the information that we need to complete your request, you will sent an email asking for additional information. Otherwise you will receive an email notification with download instructions when your shape is completed.
      Using Smart Update
Q: How do I launch Smart Update?
A:You may use Smart Update only if you have activated NetZoom, otherwise Smart Update will be disabled. To launch Smart Update, click the Smart Update icon on the main application toolbar.
Q: I see dates listed next to the product lines in Smart Update. What are these dates for?
A:The dates next to the product lines indicate when this item was last updated.
Q: When downloading updates to the library, can I stop and resume downloading at a later time?
A:No, you may only cancel. The screen that shows the status of each shape download gives you the option to select Cancel to stop the download.
Q: I am trying to download updates to the shapes in "My Favorite Shapes" using Smart Update, why are the updates not showing up?
A:Smart Update only updates the shapes in the NetZoom library. If you want to update the shape in any of your library subsets, you will have to select the updated shape in NetZoom and re-add it to that library subset.
      Common NetZoom Usage Questions
Q: What views are available for NetZoom shapes?
A:NetZoom 9 offers multiple views of shapes, including top, front, rear, 2D, and 3D views.

NOTE: Certain views may not be available on all shapes.
Q: I notice tabs on shapes within True and Icon view. What purpose do they serve?
A:The tabs signify which style views are available for that shape. Select the tab that specifies the view desired and drag the shape view to your diagram.

List View is not enabled for drag and drop. Please select a different view to drag and drop shapes.

Also, make sure that the correct diagramming application is enabled for NetZoom. In Settings and Options, click Host Application in the NetZoom tab. The diagramming applications for NetZoom are listed here; select the one you are trying to use before launching the host application.

To create new library subsets, click the New icon in the Library Pane to create as many favorite sets as you would like. Once you have your subsets created, you can add a shape to a set by selecting the subset desired and then right-clicking on a shape in search results and selecting Add to [Library Subset] or pressing Ctrl + D.

A:First, select the library subset where you wish to create the copy.

Then, after you have configured the device or rack, select the Equipment node for the shape in the Configurator pane.

Next, scroll to find the Node group in the Properties pane and provide a unique name for the device or rack in the Label property field.

When clicked it will prompt you to create a name for your property set, once you've named your property set you will be able to use the check boxes to select various properties that you would like displayed in your custom set.

To add a custom value you'll need to select an existing property box, right click on it and select Add. You can then name your custom value and add it to your property set.

Q: How do I resize shapes in a Microsoft Visio diagram? Or how do I fit a rack-mountable equipment shape on a rack that is wider than the shape I am using?
A:Shapes are drawn to the scale of the actual equipment. Occasionally you may need to resize an equipment shape. There are two different shape modes in NetZoom for this:
    1. Open Settings and Options from the NetZoom application toolbar, or press Ctrl + G.

Q: I have installed NetZoom 9, but the NetZoom icon does not appear in the Microsoft Visio toolbar.
A:If you are using Windows Vista, be sure to install NetZoom using Run as Administrator. NetZoom 9 requires Administrator rights or greater during install and use. If you do not have Administrator rights, or are unsure, consult your system administrator first.

On Windows XP, it may be helpful to modify Microsoft Visio's macro security settings. If you have any doubts about doing this, please consult your system administrator before proceeding with any changes.

    1. Open the security menu through this menu path: Tools > Macros > Security.
    2. Select the Security Level tab.
    3. Select a lower security setting, if possible.
    4. Close out of Microsoft Visio and re-launch; the NetZoom icon should appear.

    2. Click on Macro Settings.
    3. Select a lower security setting, if possible.

Q: How do I open a Microsoft Visio stencil?
A:From the Library Results palette, right click on your selected device and select Open Stencil or press Ctrl + T. A stencil of the selected equipment will launch within Microsoft Visio.
Q: I cannot connect equipment shapes.
A:First, make sure that shape connectors are enabled. Select Settings and Options in the NetZoom application toolbar or press Ctrl + G. Under the Visio tab, select Connection Points. Confirm that the correct connection points are selected, and then re-add the shapes.

Secondly, make sure that you are using a host application that will recognize embedded connection points in NetZoom shapes. For assistance, contact the Support line at 630.281.6464 or e-mail using Support@AltimaTech.com.
Q: I only see generic connectors on my shapes. Where are the connection points for equipment ports/slots?
A:Select Settings and Options in the NetZoom application toolbar or press Ctrl + G. Under the Visio tab, select Connection Points. Here you can enable connection points on applicable equipment data ports, power ports, and slots by selecting Data ports only or Boundary plus data ports.
Q: I do not see tooltips for shapes and connections.
A:Make sure you have tooltips enabled. You can check by selecting Settings and Options in the NetZoom application toolbar or pressing Ctrl + G. Under the Visio tab, select Tooltips. Confirm that No Tooltips is de-selected. Select one of the available Tooltip formats. Then click on the Update Tooltips button on the main NetZoom toolbar.

On each shape, tooltips are only available when you hover over a connection point on a selected shape after it is dropped into the host application.

Note: Tooltips are not available in certain host applications.
Q: I am trying to create a rack or data center floor diagram in Microsoft Visio. However, I notice that some of the advanced features, such as automatic builds of front and rear rack views and the data center drill-downs, don't seem to be working?
A:For NetZoom Rack Builder and Data Center Wizard to work properly, you must launch them from within Microsoft Visio using the template categories menu or from NetZoom itself. If you do not, features such as Rack Builder's real-time simultaneous front/rear rack builds and Data Center Wizard/Rack Builder integration will not work.

Also, for Rack Builder and Data Center to work together smoothly, Rack Builder should be opened using Data Center's open rack function.

    Visio's Toolbar Menu
In Microsoft Visio, select File -> New -> NetZoom for Data Centers

    Visio's Template Menu
This template menu appears at launch.

Q: I created my rack in Rack Builder, but I can't get it into my Data Center?
A:For Data Center and Rack Builder to work together the rack must first be placed in the Data Center diagram and then opened from within the data center file.
Q: How do I minimize or restore the NetZoom windows in Microsoft Visio?
A:On your keyboard, press and hold the ALT key while pressing the F7 key.
Q: Why can't I use the Smart Update and Live Search features when running NetZoom 9 within Microsoft Visio?
A:The Smart Update and Live Search features are only available when NetZoom 9 is run as a standalone application. To run Smart Update or Live Search, please close NetZoom 9 and Microsoft Visio, then launch NetZoom 9 from the Start Menu or desktop icon.
Q: I've Installed NetZoom 9 but I don't see any of the Microsoft Visio templates for it, where are they?
A:The NetZoom application should be installed after Microsoft Visio has been installed on your computer, once you have installed NetZoom you can open Visio and find the NetZoom templates by going to File->New-> NetZoom for DataCenters.

If you open Visio and go to File->New and do not see a template marked NetZoom for Data Centers the templates are missing from Visio. In order to add them you'll need open Visio and go to Tools -> Options -> Advanced Tab -> File Paths and press the button next to templates.

    Once there browse to C:\Documents and Settings\your profile\Local Settings\Application Data\Altima Tech\NetZoom 9\NZ Visio\NetZoom for DataCenters and hit okay.

(Please note: In order to do this you will need to have windows set to show hidden files and folders, you can find more info on this at http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Show-hidden-files)

You should then be able to see the NetZoom for Data Centers folder that has the NetZoom 9 templates in it.
Q: How do I fill in Custom Data for my shapes?
A:There are two ways that you can input custom data into shapes; the first is by dragging the shape from NetZoom onto the Visio page and entering the data directly into the Shape Data or Custom Properties window.

The second way is to use the NetZoom Configuration tool to enter the data in NetZoom, and then add the configured shape to your diagram.

To do this you'll first add the shape you wish to configure to your favorite shapes (You can do this by right clicking on the shape in the search results window and selecting 'Add to My Favorite Shapes').

Once you've done this youll be prompted to configure the device, by selecting yes you'll be take to the configuration tool, you can now edit custom properties of the shape. Once you've configured the device to your specifications you can save it, and access your configured version at any time from the Select Favorite Set option of the NetZoom Search Library window.

Using NetZoom with other Host Applications
Q: I don't have Microsoft Visio, but I still want to configure my racks and servers and use them in one of the other host applications. How do I do this?
A:Simply add the equipment shape to your library subset and right-click to open it in the Configurator Pane. Once the equipment shape is fully configured, add it to your host application.
Q: I use Autodesk AutoCAD and when I drag a shape from NetZoom, it is not displayed properly and the properties do not import; why?
A:There are several different versions of Autodesk AutoCAD and each version requires a different adapter to work with NetZoom. Check your host application settings in NetZoom to ensure the correct Autodesk AutoCAD adapter is enabled. Also, for best results, use Autodesk AutoCAD or Autodesk AutoCAD Electrical.

Note: Make sure that you have selected the correct Autodesk AutoCAD adapter in Settings and Options before you launch Autodesk AutoCAD; otherwise the adapter will not function correctly.
